"FESTIVAL TOURS"

Tshechus are the most important religious festivals in Bhutan, deeply rooted in the country’s cultural and spiritual traditions.

What Happens During a Tshechu?

  • Mask Dances (Cham): The central part of the festival involves sacred masked dances performed by monks and laymen in elaborate costumes. Each dance has religious significance and tells stories of Buddhist teachings, the lives of saints, and victory of good over evil.

  • Religious Rituals: Monks conduct ceremonies to invoke deities and bless the public.

  • Thongdrel Unveiling: In some Tshechus, a large appliqué scroll painting known as a thongdrel is unfurled before dawn. Viewing it is believed to cleanse sins.

  • Community Celebration: Locals dress in their finest traditional clothes (gho for men and kira for women), share meals, and socialize. It’s a time of joy and spiritual renewal.
